Life Design with the World in Mind

Life Design with the World in Mind

It contains all my work to date on food, money, conversation, community building, sustainability.

Life. This is the life part of Your Money or Your Life. The money part is actually just preparation for (or in support of) a purposeful, meaningful, joy-filled life.

You build financial security so you are ever-free-er to give, love, serve, explore, create, invent, nest, garden, raise a family, go to an ashram.

Debt, stress and deadening jobs suck the joy out of everything, and spare you no spare time.

Love takes time. Family takes time. Creativity takes time. Citizenship takes time. Navigating by a moral compass takes time.

Life in this context means those expanses of time into which you will express yourself. It’s a holy task – which means getting down to the marrow of existence, away from the frittering crowds. As Henry David Thoreau wrote:

“It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.”

“Rather than love, than money, than fame, give me truth.”

“Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.”

“Wealth is the ability to fully experience life.”

“None are so old as those who have outlived enthusiasm”

“This world is but a canvas to our imagination.”

“Our life is frittered away by detail… simplify, simplify.”

“Being is the great explainer.”

“If a man constantly aspires is he not elevated?”

Simplify your life. Don’t waste the years struggling for things that are unimportant. Don’t burden yourself with possessions. Keep your needs and wants simple and enjoy what you have. Don’t destroy your peace of mind by looking back, worrying about the past. Live in the present. Simplify!
Most  lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them.
